Comprehension in each direction hovered at around 50%. Jensen had Portuguese and Spanish speakers (all from Latin America, and none expert at the other language) listen to passages in the other language, then answer comprehension questions in their own language. Florida International University professor John B. I’ve only found one study that addresses this question systematically. It’s also echoed in linguistic literature, most notably by eminent Spanish scholar Ralph Penny: “speakers of Spanish understand at least some of what is said in Portuguese, and the Portuguese speakers will understand a good deal more of what is said in Spanish” ( Variation and Change in Spanish, p. This isn’t just my own observation ask any Spanish speaker, and you’re likely to hear the same thing. This impression has stuck with me in later encounters with Portuguese speakers. At the time, I had the impression that our Brazilian cousins could understand our Spanish much better than we understood their Portuguese. In particular, our Brazilian cousins spoke Portuguese to me and my father, and we spoke Spanish to them. Her two brothers immigrated to Brazil.Īs a result, our occasional and joyous get-togethers with the extended family were a linguistic smörgåsbord featuring Polish, Yiddish, English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. Her three sisters, who didn’t look Jewish, managed to survive the war hiding in plain sight in Poland, then married conscripted French laborers and moved to France. My grandmother had already immigrated from Poland to the United States. This job is best to have as a part time, for extra money but not as your main source of income because of the inconsistencies. After the second World War, my grandmother’s family scattered all over the world. So, if you are one of those who is disrespectful, likes cursing at work, and just likes to hang out and socialize. There are good monitors that not on the schedule, and there are loud, gossipers, and people who just go there to hang out, that do make it into the schedule. Also, if you don't work enough hours per month you WOULD lose your health benefits. This is why people are constantly leaving this job. Someone who would take the time, before scheduling, to give employees the same opportunity and same amount of hours as their favorites. Someone who would take the time and check how many hours each employee has worked with those that have been home, before scheduling the same people. The only thing that can change that culture is for it to become a more balanced, fair place of work, is to bring a Supervisor from the outside who is bias and knows no one at the job. ![]() Same people are working all the time and the new Supervisor still puts on the schedule her tight knit. If you are not in the tight group forget about having stability in the job. There is no room for growth and interestingly enough personal friends of the supervisor were hired to be team leaders.įavoritism is a huge problem in Atlanta. This is a very cool job but was completely ruined by the leadership they picked. When days off are requested and approved you get punished with hours taken away from your schedule. They have a very unstable review of your work process. You can’t opt out of their insurance and they will take the insurance away if you don’t work enough hours. It pays okay ( with inflation and gas prices I don’t even know if it’s that competitive) It’s been very slow for a while and many people sitting at home, yet the company continues to hire new people. There is a rule in the employee handbook about no fraternizing and the supervisor is dating one of the clients… yet no higher ups seem to raise an eyebrow. ![]() So you basically accumulate all this sick pay and never get to use it because you're never working or always working. If you have any overtime and get sick you can't use your sick pay. ![]() If you aren't on a case you can't use your sick pay. Also, they're always pushing to hire but there's already not enough work for their current employees. Some will try to make you look bad to make themselves look better. Coworkers are usually nice but it does get competitive. ![]() If you can't leave when they want you to, they'll go with someone who will. You are also less likely to be sent for travel work if you ask for rentals or a flight. If you travel they don't pay per diem or gas, they want to make you travel in your own vehicle (so if anything happens it's on you), they even want you staying with family and friends so they don't have to pay for a hotel. The company just wants to nickel and dime everything. It's project-based so unless you travel (frequently and have to know the right people) work is too inconsistent to justify staying. The work itself is interesting so that's a plus. The amount linguists get paid is the biggest pro.
